Rebecca Talking

Thank you so much for agreeing to do this interview with me I greatly appreciate it. The purpose of this interview is to pick your brain on your writing process and hopefully help and inspire other authors.

Let’s get started…

First tell me a little bit about yourself.

I’m an award-winning author with 4 novels published. I am currently working on a new novel. I am the mother of 5 and am happily married. I am also the founder of a nonprofit called Choose Joy and blog on that website often.

There’s a back story about the marriage…this is my second marriage. My first husband died from cancer which is what got me into writing. 3 of the 5 kids are from my first marriage.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about your husband and it is amazing how you have managed to overcome something so tragic and to find happiness.

Yes, I have a very strong faith in God, that’s what got me through it.

That is awesome

What would you say is your favorite book of all time?

hmmm favorite of all time…that’s got to be “Redeeming Love” by Francine Rivers

I see you said you have published 4 novels and are working on one right now.

Do you self-publish or use a publisher?

I used a self-publishing company for the first two then moved to CreateSpace and Kindle for the second two

What genre do you write in?

Christian Contemporary Fiction

however, the novel I’m currently working on is set in the late 1940’s

Do have both digital and print books?

Yes. I sell signed paperbacks from my website. And of course, paperback and eBooks on Amazon

Do you write under a pen name?

What would you say inspires your writing?

I like to tackle important topics in a way that is entertaining. Book 1 is the fictionalized version of my story with a stalker. Book 2 is about sex trafficking. Book 3 is about the need for rehabilitation after rescue from trafficking. Book 4 is about unresolved anger, grief and forgiveness. Current manuscript is about assumptions that lead to stigmas and also the need to love children with special needs.

Awesome you really find a way to cover different topics that are important

Books 1-4 are all intertwined.

so that helps

Have you ever thought of writing nonfiction?

I have a nonfiction out, but not currently in print. It was actually produced by the self-publishing company as well. It’s a devotional that includes works from my late husband (a pastor) and my own.

I am going to get it on CreateSpace and Kindle on of these days! LOL

I sell the devotional mostly when I do public speaking

LOL that is great and what an awesome way to use your husbands work and keep it out there

How often do you do public speaking?

It really depends on the year/season. I try to do something once a month. That’s about all my schedule can handle

That is understandable as you sound like you have your hands full

LOL yes

You have been an author for some time now what do you do to promote and market your books?

I sell when I speak. I actually when on a tour after my second book was published. It was crazy…myself and 3 kids in a minivan driving from state to state for 2 weeks, but that was an incredible way to sell a bunch of books. I haven’t done an actual tour since then, but I speak local and that’s when I sell most. KU has been good for getting my name out there are well as doing free promotions.

Awesome and I can’t imagine a tour with the kiddos. My husband has a band and lots of shows and I am the manager, so I go with him and it can get extremely hectic.

Now that I am remarried and not raising 3 kids on my own, I use the books as fundraisers for nonprofits that fight sex trafficking and stuff like that.

That is amazing

Basically, all the money from the books aren’t for me

Cool, bands are fun!

That’s actually how I grew up…that’s a whole different story! ha-ha

That is awesome and super generous of you to donate for such a great cause like that.

When I was a single mom, the man who was stalking me in my early 20’s resurfaced and threatened to kill my kids. It was at that moment that I realized how helpless other women must feel. While my situation was extreme, I had people who were helping me. Women caught in trafficking need people to be their voice.

That must have been so hard to go through and so courageous of you to step up and take your own experiences to help others. Not a lot of people can do that. You are amazing

My God is amazing. Me… I’m a work in progress! ha-ha

What would you caution other authors about in writing?

Giving up

It seems with every book I start writing…I begin asking myself if it’s a waste of time.  The other caution would be not choosing titles and covers with a critical eye. As for covers…the first time you see that cover you are thrilled and amazed and emotional. Choosing something so important with your emotions isn’t good.

I agree with that. On one of my books I had originally planned on using a friend for the cover and we did pictures and everything and when it came time to finally do it I was like this doesn’t feel right. I finally had people vote on the covers and they all picked a different one lol

Yes. My first book actually has me on the cover. Wasn’t my choice but the publishing company I was using made me feel like I had no choice.

It was all rush and hurry and here’s your cover.

What has been your biggest success so far?

Interestingly enough, I would say my first book has been the bestselling of the 4 and is the one that won an award. I have grown so much as an author with each book that I personally feel book 4 is way better than book 1

Yes, I can understand that.

What advice would you give for other authors?

Set reachable goals. Read. Ask friends and family to read as you write.

OK great

I try to write 1000 words each time I open that manuscript

That is a good goal

My writing style is a plodder…I’ve never been able to binge write. So, for me to make sure that I write at least 1000 really helps me keep a good momentum

What is one thing you want your readers to know about you?

I’m an overcomer and they can be one too.

Awe I love that

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions today. I only have one more

What is the best way for readers to find you?

Note there’s no m on the end of my website

.co not .com

This interview was awesome, and I learned a lot. I hope you do too…

Lots of Love
